From the ages of around 10-13 I was given the opportunity to pick up and learn the piano thanks to my stepmoms experience as a music teacher. Much like most opportunities that I have been lucky enough to receive I squandered it. For whatever reason I stubbornly refused to take the piano seriously, despite my parents and teacher emphasizing its importance, and just like they predicted I would come to regret my decision. If I had done so I would have the foundation to give form to the songs in my head, to play alongside my friends, and play for the woman I love.
I gradually lost whatever skills I gained in that 3 year span, and there would come times when I would try to pick it back up to no avail. All was not in vain, however, now that I’ve resumed my piano journey, the technique, and the songs have all started coming back to me, the foundation is there no matter how small.
Initially, this project was to learn how to play guitar and pick the piano back up as hobbies, something I can do to keep myself sane within music’s warmth, away from the cold monotony of school and work. Due to recent events, music has become one of my most fulfilling outlets, offering some form of respite from my grief, allowing me to breathe when I’m drowning. Through music, I have connected with friends, specifically my best friend, just like we did 4 years ago. Thus I name this project, this effort, an effort to learn, to create, and connect via music after the song that bound us.
